My mom, the most amazing, generous, kind woman I have ever met, died on Thursday December 20th.
She passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family. Jessie & John were unfortunately delayed by winter weather and the crappy Chicago airport. But we held the phone up to Mom’s ear so Jessie could tell her how much she loved her. (I’m assuming that’s what she said. Heaven knows that was a private conversation between the two of them and I didn’t intrude enough to listen.)
It’s been hard. I expect it will be hard for a long time. I expect I will rail about the unfairness of it all for a long time. I expect I will continue to think that she’s just taking a nap and she’ll be down any minute for a long time.
I went through the photos on her iPad and on mine and found some of the best ones from the last year. As my dad wrote for the obit, 2012 was both the worst and the best year of my mom’s life. There was so much that she wanted to do – and she did – before she died.
She got to see the births of four grandchildren. She went on a trip to Ireland – complete with 9 holes of golf. She went on an 8 week trip to the West Coast. She spent a lot of time with her sisters and her family and her friends. It was a busy year and she didn’t let her cancer slow her down.
Here are some of my favorite photos of Mom from 2012:
And here’s one of my absolute favorites from the last year. It really shows her joy and zest for life and her victorious attitude.
