Bits of Random

Just a few random things I wanted to share, none of which is hugely momentous or worthy of a 700 word post by itself.

This week, the Littlest Brewster tried out her very first rocking horse.

This was actually my sister’s rocking horse when she was small, which my dad’s parents made for her. LB liked it but was unable to master the motion needed to make it rock. She sort of thrashed about and nearly whacked her head on it, but it was all good.

John sent me my very first fountain pen as a random, thinking of you gift.

The DreadBrewer and I are such heathens we had to watch a 15 minute YouTube video before we could figure out how to load the ink. Once we had it loaded and I started using it, I fell in love. DB was not quite as impressed as I was, but that’s fine because it means I won’t have to fight him off my pen. Although I do now understand the quest to find the perfect paper on which to use one’s awesome pen…

This morning has been a series of small mishaps and frustrations. None of them is enough to get completely upset, but all of them combined are enough to put me in a shitty mood for the day. Everyone, consider yourselves warned.

I got a new phone! We’ve never had smart phones before, as they were so expensive. But we were getting pretty tired of the price-gouging Sprint was doing for our old “dumb” phones and we started researching other options. We decided to give republic wireless a shot – $19 a month for unlimited talk, text, and web on a mid-level smart phone seems pretty awesome. There’s a 30 day money-back guarantee, so I’m going to try it out for a bit before we totally commit and tell Sprint where to stick it. The reason it’s so cheap is that it’s a hybrid phone that switches between Wi-Fi and cellular, which may or may not be a huge pain in the ass. I’ll let you know in 30 days if it’s worth it to make the switch yourselves.

I’m joining a gym this week. It’s high time I did something like this for myself, so I’m going to bite the bullet and do it. Well, first I’m going to get a 7-day trial pass and make sure that it actually works with all of our schedules, but I’m pretty sure I can make it work. It helps that I’m planning on joining the local Taj Mahal of gyms, Lifetime Fitness.

And finally, something funny to make your day just a little brighter. The DreadBrewer came downstairs this morning, slightly flustered that he was running late. I pointed out that all he had left to do was grab his bag and leave because I had already stuck his lunch, his breakfast, and his tea in the car. He told me, in all seriousness, “I still have to put on my belt and tuck in my shirt!!!!” And then confirmed when questioned that yes, he considers these actual tasks on his morning to-do list. I may or may not have rolled my eyes at him.

Have a good weekend everyone!

  1. So, the thing about that pen, is that it was a really inexpensive “entry” pen, and it’s a medium nib. There are fine and extra fine nibs– though not, as yet, for that pen, which has recently come on the market. You said that you’re preference is for “ridiculously fine pens,” so I sent a Pilot, which is a Japanese company (Other name: Namiki). Japanese pens have a much “finer” standard than, say Pelikan, which is German and fairly broad. Not too important, just interesting.

Also, there a very big “pen show” in Cary soon: I wish I could go, because pen shows are apparently (I’ve never been, of course) a magical place where you can actually try all kinds of different pens from various different companies, with free giveaways and no pressure. I’m so jealous of you for having one close, even if you wouldn’t bother going.

I’ll send you some paper 🙂

    • You know – I told DB that I thought you had managed to find me a fine tip and he pointed out that it was medium. Their fine tip must be like a spider’s web!

And you don’t need to send me paper. 🙂

I did google “Ridiculously nice writing paper” to no avail, however.
