Yesterday, I took my very first Zumba class ever.
I know that’s hard to believe with the insane Zumba craze that has been sweeping the nation forever but I’ve simply never had the time or inclination to go. But I’ve been looking for ways to mix it up at the gym and Zumba was the only class offered in the time slot that I was free, so I decided to give it a shot.
And all I can say is Zumba is magic.
At first, I kept thinking to myself “I am too white and too uncoordinated to be here.” I mean – I’m the girl that her boyfriend stopped – mid-striptease – because it was too embarrassing for him to watch. When I was a cheerleader, I was always in the back for dance routines because it was so painful to see me try and do a body roll. My butt and my hips do not move in sync. They’re not even on speaking terms half the time.
But by the end of the class, I felt like I was in the movie Center Stage.
I realized that nobody in the class gave a crap whether or not I could do a body roll. And that half of the women there were just as uncoordinated as I was (when I had a second to watch them). And, most importantly, it was fun. I was wiggling my hips and doing “Booty Work” like nobody’s business. The hour passed before it even occurred to me to check the clock.
So I will definitely be going back to Zumba when my schedule allows.
And who knows? As my Zumba skills improve, I may even try that striptease again. 😉
