New Year’s Resolutions

I love New Year’s Day because I am an eternal optimist.

No, I lie. I’m not an eternal optimist. I’m a chronic worrier who still believes that everything will turn out okay. Maybe that counts as an optimist? But I ramble.

Anyway you classify it, every year I am convinced that this year is going to be the best year yet. I love new beginnings and January 1st is the mother of new beginnings. The only way it can be any better is if it falls on a Monday, because everyone knows that Mondays are the best day to start new things. ((For example, you can only start a new diet on a Monday. And if the Monday is the first of the month, then it’s super auspicious. A Monday that is not only the first of the month but also the first of the year? Well, you’re bound to succeed at any endeavor you undertake on a day like that!))

So here’s my list of resolutions for the coming year that I know will make 2014 awesome:
1) Floss every day. Although I will go ahead give myself a free pass and say that I don’t have to floss the day that I deliver BIT.
2) Maintain my hard-earned healthier habits. It was a heck of a lot of work to lose all of that weight last year and to learn some new, more moderate eating habits and to get to a much, much better place in terms of physical fitness. I want to keep up with those healthier resolutions throughout the year. Which leads us to…
3) Lose the baby weight. Obviously, this isn’t a resolution for now but for after BIT arrives. I would like to be back at my pre-pregnancy weight by New Year’s Day 2015, which I don’t think is unreasonable.
4) Show myself a little bit more love and understanding. I have ridiculously high standards for everyone else and even higher ones for myself. And I am the queen of self-flagellation when I magically can’t live up to my impossible expectations. 2014 is going to be the year of “Good Enough” and I’m going to see if that makes me any happier and more contented that the year of “I can’t believe you let yourself down again, you sad sack.”

Of all of those, I’m sure that numbers 2 & 4 will go the farthest towards making the coming year more joyous one. So those are the ones I’m really going to focus on.

What about you? What are your resolutions to make 2014 your best year yet?
