Halfway there! BIT’s 20 week update

Holy moly, I am halfway through my pregnancy! How did that happen?!?! I swear to you, it snuck up on me out of nowhere. Here’s the latest update on how BIT and I are doing.

Heartburn is starting to rear it’s ugly head again. When I was pregnant with the Littlest Brewster, it got so bad that I had to sleep sitting up, despite popping Tums, Zantac, and Pepcid like they were candy. ((Seriously, this may gross some of you out but if I lay down flat, I would choke on my stomach acid in my sleep and wake up coughing/vomiting. It wasn’t cool.)) I haven’t yet added the round-the-clock Zantac but the day is coming, I know.

I don’t think my mood swings are quite as bad as they were in the first trimester. However, you may want to verify that with the DreadBrewer because I may be slightly biased. I know my energy level is better than it was in first tri, but I didn’t think I was ever really that exhausted. ((Although looking back, I can remember walking up a flight of stairs while carrying the Littlest Brewster at around 7 weeks and thinking I was going to die. Either I’ve gotten more energy or I’ve gotten smarter and stopped toting my gargantuan toddler up and down the stairs.))

Cravings. Everyone wants to know what cravings you’ve been having. I think it’s the general population’s way of living vicariously through someone they consider as having a free pass to eat the crazy things that they want to eat but never would. I can’t really say that I’ve been having any hardcore cravings, but I didn’t with LB either. There are things that I want, sure, but nothing that I’m going to drive out of my way this very instant to get. That being said, I put a serious hurting on a bag of jumbo marshmallows and a jar of peanut butter last weekend. It was delicious.

Other not fun developments – I apparently walked around with a UTI for a few days before it occurred to me to get checked out. I had had some intermittent cramping on Friday and thought it was either BIT getting comfortable or just some gas pains. Saturday wasn’t so bad, but then Sunday was awful. I was having terrible cramps on top of a continual ache in my abdomen. The DreadBrewer insisted I spend the day on the sofa, drinking water. While this did help with the pain, it was about as pleasurable to me as poking myself in the eye with a grapefruit spoon. I don’t like forced slothfulness. I even missed Zumba! On Monday, I called my OB’s office just to check in and they insisted I come in to be seen right away. ((And yes, I tried to talk them into letting me wait until Tuesday. Nurses make terrible patients. I’m just sayin’….)) And the UA showed a UTI and some other stuff that leads the doc to believe I probably have a bit of a kidney stone in there as well. So antibiotics and more fluids it is. Hopefully the pain goes away quickly and this doesn’t happen again this pregnancy! And DB was super gratified and not-a-little smug to know that he had told me the right things to do with fluids and rest.

As far as weight gain goes, I feel like I’m holding fairly steady at 0.5 to 1.0 pound per week. This week’s weight was 158.8 ((I am, however, having a bit of a scale SNAFU at home right now, so that number may be significantly higher once I get it all straightened out. Although I sincerely hope not, as that would suck.)), which puts total gain so far at 3.8 lbs. ((And I totally verified with my sister using 155 lbs, my weight when I got my BFP, is legitimate. So there.)) Other than the marshmallow fiasco (which then morphed into an 8 hour, shove-anything-I-can-reach-into-my-mouth fiasco), I’ve managed to keep it pretty healthy. (Read: I try to only allow myself one treat a day, not five.) When I was pregnant with LB, I wrote everything I ate down in a food journal. With BIT, I’m still using the MyFitnessPal app and trying to ignore the fact that the little graph for progress is now going up, not down. I’ve learned that if I’m not accountable somehow, then I can conveniently “forget” entire meals.

Here’s a picture of the bump this week:

As you can see, he/she is growing like a weed, as am I. When I went to Charlotte the other weekend, I went through the box of maternity clothes that Jessie and I have amassed and fished out my old maternity scrubs. But somehow, I don’t think they’re going to fit no matter how big my bump gets.

And yes, I know I have a lot of hair

I forgot that a) I started off my last pregnancy about 15 pounds heavier than this one and b) I have a tendency to buy my clothes too large anyway. Essentially rendering my three pairs of $25 maternity scrub pants useless, much to my irritation. I needed some new scrubs anyway, so I bought these in the hopes that they will work not only for my pregnancy but also after I go back to work.

ST326C_CNAVYI figure I can slip the waistband under the bump as things progress. We’ll see how it goes, but as they were only $15 I’m not too terribly attached to them.

I also sprung for some maternity workout wear from Old Navy. I was sort-of in love with these ones from For Two Fitness, but I couldn’t bring myself to spend $65 on a pair of yoga pants. The Old Navy ones, while probably not as nice, were on sale for $15 or so. (They’re actually still on sale, for any of my buddies who are interested in maternity activewear.)

And I think that’s about all of the new and exciting and annoying things from the last two weeks. Look for another update, with more belly photos (hooray!), in 2 more weeks. I know you can’t wait.

  1. I had the same yoga pants from Old Navy, they were almost too stretchy (as in they seemed to get looser as I wore them) but they served the purpose! I can’t believe you are half way through the pregnancy already, yay baby BIT!

I love comments! Feel free to leave one!
