The First of Many

This weekend was the first of what I know will be many trips to Lowe’s and other garden centers to pick up supplies for the growing season. Given that it was in the upper 60s and sunny, the DreadBrewer and I were both excited to get out into the garden and get started for the year.

We amended and turned over a couple of beds, cleaned up some detritus leftover from last year’s garden, and cleaned out my deck planters in preparation for this year’s attempt at an herb garden. We had also purchased some kohlrabi plants, but we decided to hold off on planting them until after next weekend and its anticipated frost/wintry mix of precipitation.

I will say that all of this fresh air and hard work was a little much for me and I was completely whacked by the end of the day. I had told DB we needed to get to work on the garden stuff while I was still mobile and energetic enough to really help, but I think that window is a lot smaller than I had originally thought.

The DreadBrewer has been hard at work ordering our seeds for the year. We’re going to try something new this year and start almost all of our plants from seed.

The crops we’re going to start from seed are:

The crops we’re getting transplants or sets or whatnot for are:
-Blueberries (we’re going to add in 6 or so blueberry bushes to our berry patch)
-Garlic (we used cloves we set aside from last year’s crop)
-Kohlrabi (we’re doing two crops)

And the crops we have established, thank the Lord, are:

See why I think there are a lot of trips to garden centers in the future? I’m not even sure I remembered all of the things we’re planning on growing!

We did agree that we’ll set up the Dripworks irrigation system I got DB for Christmas last year. Because I don’t see watering all of those plants one at a time happening with a toddler and a newborn.

Lets just hope we get most of the planting done before BIT makes his/her debut.

Has anyone else started garden planning or preparation already?

  1. Pretty sure I have you to blame for the fact that despite feeling like death this weekend, we ordered 36 berry plants, cleared a giant strip of land, put in two more raised beds (one for herbs, one for more veggies), cleaned out the beds, and got a truck load of “good” dirt.

Moral of the story: you are never to mention gardening to my husband again.

    • The DreadBrewer was so excited upon reading your comment. šŸ™‚ He was like, “I KNEW we liked them for a reason!”

I love comments! Feel free to leave one!
